Bernard Loyal is a French photographer. Through his readings and travels he built portrait series of women reading in various places in
According to the statistics, women read more literature than men. Novels seem to run up their imagination and that's why they were
kept so long away from it.
Madame Bovary, the heroine of Gustave Flaubert's novel, was unhappy, critics claimed, because she read too much love stories she confused
them with real life.
from coffee shops to museums, a photographer inspired by women readers
Strikingly, the theme of women surprised in their reading inspired, if not fascinated, lots of famous painters. On some paintings, artists
even gave these women a defiant attitude. Bernard Loyal also fell for the charm of these women-readers he met in coffee shops, public
transport or museums, and creates, since 2017, some "Reading Scenes" in various places in Europe.
Reading scenes (the "Scènes de lecture") accross Europe
In these "Reading Scenes" built by the photographer in various places in Europe, books are easily recognisable. The atmosphere of
the pictures are based on the books, the books' titles or the author's biographies. Even if these pictures are women's portraits in Europe,
the books and the photographer's reading memories are also subjects of the photographs.
From Madame Bovary to european women-readers
As an author, Bernard Loyal claims his right to subjectivity. Gustave Flaubert used to declare defiantly "I am Emma Bovary",
Bernard Loyal has the audacity to declare "I am my european women-readers".
