L'échappée belle

Exhibition from 31 August to 18 September 2017
Alliance Française Bruxelles-Europe, avenue des Arts 46, 1000 Brussels

As part of its first partnership with Transcultures/City Sonic, the Alliance Française Bruxelles-Europe asked Christophe Bailleau and Philippe Franck (from the Pastoral duo) to present a selection of 20-odd photos (shot by Christophe Bailleau) to go with poetic excerpts (written by Philippe Franck). Pastoral composed a dozen tracks for the image & text pairings that visitors can listen to on headsets to suit their mood. L’échappée belle (a collaboration that began in 2007 and grew in 2017) sees the duo take a surreal yet poetic look at the imaginary worlds and Walloon resort areas which conceal a Lynch-esque bizarreness tinged with quirky humour. Recent films by Pastoral (Figures, Limpide, No meaning), Christophe Bailleau’s solo work (La colonie, Fumigène, Sérotones etc.) and radio pieces created by Christophe Bailleau (Love is in the train, Le yaourt n’est pas un yoghourt, La perte) are played on a loop to add the finishing touch to this image & sound exhibition in motion.

To celebrate the multi-disciplinary design exhibition, Pastoral is bringing out a new CD+photo booklet/texts, L’échappée belle, produced by Transcultures on the alt label Transonic.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Christophe Bailleau (Fr/Be) has been exploring an unusual musical and visual project for over 15 years. His tracks use acoustic sounds (guitar, percussion, vocals) that are twisted and blended with concrete and domestic noises. He conjures up a play on expectation, silence and tempestuous tension. He has also produced installations, radio pieces, CDs and intriguing poetic short films. He has made countless CDs on independent labels (Le cri de la harpe, Stilll, Carte postale, Eglantine, Annexia, Fenetre, Soundscaping, Optical Sound etc.) and cassettes alone or in collaboration as well as a DVD of his short films produced by 68/septante since 2004 (Brussels).

Pastoral (Be) is the name of the duo founded in 2010 by Christophe Bailleau (musician and visual artist) and Philippe Franck (musician, curator and author) who have brought their worlds together to create lounge, post-folk and post-rock pieces that explore audio subjects that are often heavenly, sometimes more earthly yet impressive melodies. Pastoral’s performances blend electronic sounds, guitar and vocals which are often accompanied by related videos with soundscapes and haiku texts. The duo have performed at festivals, exhibitions and events in Belgium and overseas. They will release their first album for the L’échappée belle audio-poetry-photography project on the independent Belgian label Transonic this September.
